New Haswell-E chips out

I swear just about every time a new game is released people complain about sli being broken.

I always stick to one card solutions, I wouldn't be surprised if the GTX 9 series don't run as hot or hotter than ATI's 290 cards. I'll wait for the 20nm versions due next year.

Data and yourself, keep saying that. I really don't wish it were true. You can always turn off sli with the click of a button can't you? For those alpha stage games

I haven't built a new rig in about 6 years. My last upgrade was to the GTX 570 back in 2010. It's probably time for a new one, but I don't see any games on the horizon that I'll be playing outside of GTA 5, if and when it ever comes out for PC.

The new Haswell-E CPU's don't look like a major leap forward for gaming based on some of the reviews I've seen. They seem to excel in other areas though. I was going to wait until Nvidia releases the GTX 880. The rumor is there will be an announcement next month and then it will be available for purchase soon afterwards. Nerds are already pissing all over it because it will only have a 256-bit bus instead of 512 though. Supposedly the performance will be below or on par with a 780 Ti, but it will be cheaper. I guess we'll find out.

For gaming, anything after the 2500K/2600K are minor upgrades, if you have those or better, keep them and throw your money at video cards and SSDs, video card for gaming and SSD for overall system responsiveness.

Isn't Broadwell slated to release in 4-5 months anyway? Seems like the only thing new processors offer are less power consumption and cooler temps.

How would a 5820k rig compare to an i7-950 / X58? I just realized my primary PC is about 4 years old!

still running an i7 960 here, can't say I've ever felt a need to upgrade it... other than.. you know, feeling the need to upgrade it.

That said, just put this order through for a new computer for the folks yesterday:

..that's probably about the cheapest place you can get stuff here in Aus. Feel free to compare and laugh at how much more expensive some of that shit is than you guys pay, though I'm pretty sure it's gotten a lot better than it once was.

I don't have much faith in that power supply, you should really buy that as a separate component and don't go cheap on it.

Invest in an SSD for your Programs/OS, even a small 120gb drive

I would think you could get an OEM license for Windows 7 a lot cheaper if you hunt around. Buy a key and download your .iso

Normally I'd agree, but this isn't going to be under a huge demand. It'll do. If I get any problems with it, then I'll look at replacing it but at that price point, case + PSU is probably the same price as a bare case.

The drive there is a hybrid, with 8gb of nand flash onboard to basically work like a cache. It's good enough, and I don't have to go to the trouble of trying to explain to my parents about having two drives and have them changing everything over to D:, including all the annoying windows default "C:\users" kinda garbage that floods with crap without registry hacks. Again, this is for my computer-literate-but-not-great parents.

Almost certainly, if I was in the US. Microsoft (and a bunch of other vendors, for that matter) like to fuck us over here in Australia. I went to license an already-installed copy of win 7 ultimate I had at MSs site.. as soon as I changed the drop-down in my billing details from 'USA' to 'Australia', the price jumped by about a hundred bucks. It's infuriatingly annoying and IMO is one of the big reasons Australians pirate at the rate we do - because we're being blatantly fucked over by many of these guys anyway.
