USA Today titles article as follows:
Take this, Trump: More cities add Obama's name to landmarks, highways
Why is that not lumped in the opinion section due to the headline?
The mass overdose appears to have been largely caused by the dangerous opioid fentanyl, Chico police Chief Mike O’Brien said at a news conference.
“Every indication is that this mass overdose incident was caused from the ingestion of some form of fentanyl in combination with another substance. That is yet to be confirmed, but we do anticipate confirmation in the coming days,” O’Brien said.
Another week, another feverish contest among Democrats to see who can drag the party faster and farther to the left. The new year is beginning with a blistering pace, with wild and crazy ideas popping up across the country.
Start in Washington, where Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi made a lasting impression by saying no, no to President Trump’s sensible proposal for barriers and other security at the southern border. Their rejection, and implicit denial that there is even a problem, serves as an invitation to hundreds of thousands of more migrants to cross illegally. And each new wave guarantees that future Dems will be able to demand amnesty for successive generations of “Dreamers,” thus roiling America for years.
Heckuva job, Chuck and Nancy. You should start a podcast, where you each get your own podium.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, already the left’s congressional rookie of the year, added to her appeal by making a push to tax the richest Americans at 70 percent of their income. She also continues to campaign for a Green New Deal, a set of ideas so big — and vague — that a Vox writer said it aims to do nothing less than “decarbonize the economy and make it fairer and more just.”
Wow — it’s hard to be more of a purist than that.
Meanwhile, new California Gov. Gavin Newsom signaled his virtue by promising his state would be a “sanctuary to all who seek it.” He also expanded free health care for illegal immigrants, apparently hoping to attract more of them. Bravo!
The competition, then, was stiff — until New York City Mayor de Blasio blew them all away. He wins first prize by vowing womb-to-tomb handouts and a permanent push for more free stuff.
Appearing well-rested from months of doing nothing, de Blasio lapped the competition with three days of come-and-get-it giveaways. First he vowed free health care for 600,000 New Yorkers, half of them here illegally. Next came a plan to force private employers to give nearly all workers 10 paid vacation days a year.
Then, in his State of the City speech, de Blasio secured victory by making even more promises, such as seizing private apartment buildings from bad landlords, and laying out a vision for a city that would bury capitalism.
A red-diaper baby himself, the mayor declared a total class war: “Brothers and sisters, there’s plenty of money in the world. There’s plenty of money in this city. It’s just in the wrong hands.”
A recent New York Times report alleging that President Donald Trump was investigated by the FBI as a potential national security threat as well as a Russian agent has sent shockwaves through the nation, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brushed it off as absurd.
In an interview for CBS News’ “Face the Nation” set to air Sunday, Pompeo declined to engage in a serious discussion on the report when host Margaret Brennan asked for his reaction.
“I’m not going to comment on New York Times stories, but I’ll certainly say this, that the notion that President Trump is a threat to American national security is absolutely ludicrous,” Pompeo said.
Pushed by Brennan to explain whether he was aware that an FBI investigation had been underway, Pompeo again dismissed her question.
“Margaret, Margaret, Margaret. I’ve answered this question repeatedly indeed on your show,” he said. “The idea that’s contained in the New York Times story that President Trump was a threat to American national security is silly on its face and not worthy of a response.”
A veteran political observer now warns the Democratic Party to stop endless pushback against President Trump and his administration, and get back to business.
“Results not resistance. That’s what I think the American public was expecting when they brought Democrats back into power in the House. But instead, echoing Hillary Clinton’s ill-fated 2016 strategy, the Democratic leaders so far have fully planted a flag in simply opposing legislation, funding and appointments under the theory that putting lead boots on President Trump is the best way to get him out of office, even if the country is put on pause for another two years. This is a fundamental mistake,” wrote Mark Penn in a Fox News op-ed published Saturday.
He was chief strategist for Bill Clinton’s 1996 presidential campaign, along with Hillary Clinton’s 2000 Senate and 2008 presidential campaigns.
Mr. Penn points to recent polls which suggests the voting public favors reasonable compromise over dramatic attacks and counterattacks.
“The idea that a few billion dollars for more walls, fences and border security rises to that moral level is overdone, especially since the Democrats supported nearly 600 miles of barriers across California not long ago. This is about politics, not policy. About the partisan bases, not the swing voters. And everybody knows it,” Mr. Penn said in the wide-ranging op-ed.
His advice comes as some Democrats resort to political stunts — two California lawmakers this week showed up at the White House gate with garbage to protest the partial government shutdown. Mr. Penn also cited freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, who has transfixed the news media and garnered attention for her outspoken socialist ideas.
“Rather than being overshadowed by the Ocasio-Cortez show, the Democrats have an opportunity to realign the mainstream suburbs here on a longer-term basis if they become the party of action and fair compromise. They can be the ones who point fingers and fight over who caused the shutdown or they can be the leaders who stepped up, were bigger and ended it for the good of the country. The choice should be an easy one,” Mr. Penn wrote.
