Modern Russians are not communists any more. That ended with the fall of the Soviet Union in the 90's and the communist party no longer controls the government. There is a communist federal party in government, but they no longer form the government. They hold 57 of 450 seats in parliament, a very distant second place to the ruling United Russia party.

In theory, they're a parliamentary governed democracy but, but believed (with good reason) to be ruled by a dictator controlled oligarchy.


Putin runs as an independent not officially affiliated with any of Russia's current political parties.

I'm not sure how everyone can get this story so wrong when literally 100 news outlets have done a story on the guy since 2014. He's a former US Army Engineer turned Arborist who is pro-communist and moved to Donbass to help save trees. Somehow, he became a local hero for supporting the breakaway regions and became a member of the Donetsk People's Republic army as an Engineer. He denounced his US citizenship, smokes pot and listens to the grateful dead, and hates both Biden and Trump and American.
