The map is the game

-A- ...Lost?

Veteran XV
I have been practicing with a competitive clan throughout T:V beta and release, and so ive kind of had my head very focused on the maps officially released (what, all 8 of them). In complete ignorance, I have only played on servers that played official maps.

Tonight, I jumped on Mofo's and those guys were running their late-beta community maps , some T2 and T1 revival maps, some new. but

I gotta tell you guys, once the maps were built like the world we were raised in, our tribes world- with tall sloping hills and open flags with hi-speed cappers with long skiis home requiring escorts and hand-offs because of open chaingun visibility - The grapple was seemingly almost useless, except for some redirection - and heavys spamming from the hi-hills luring you to come to them, then skiing in for the rape - and the little gripes about physics were really pretty out-of-mind....OUR WORLD.

Im telling you, gentlemen,
IT WAS OUR TRIBES AGAIN.

The maps really put me there again. sure, it wasnt exactly like i remember, but the tall hills and open speed ranges really didnt make me feel like i wasnt able to boogie my medium across that map.

Irrational picked the most newcomer-friendly maps that theyre tribes-newbie designers could concieve of, and well so what. screw their cheesy maps. whatever. good for the demo and newbies. T2 and T1 both had quite a few maps ship with the game that we discarded, and most of our most memorable came from our community map makers.

If this December patch can show some real progression in wrapping up the feature-set of this game (tourney-mode, recordings, weapon and vehicle bugs) we can take it from here.

Validuz and others with the drive and commitment are talking about all the makings of the next proper Competition mod, and with the next generation of maps, this game is going to rock just like T1/T2 did and we can mod the rest to spice it just right. we can make it whatever we want to be.

Most of you will be back to play this game, just like u bums came finally to T2classic. so dont get too out of shape u grumpy TW motherlovers...

yea I downloaded that 100mb mappack to just try some of the maps...they really had the TRIBES feel to them that I didn't get with the T:V retail maps (tropics probably coming close...but not too close). I'd recommend anyone who hasn't played any of the new community maps to really atleast just give them a look over. Fun stuff.

Garsh... and here I was expecting flames for my unabashed "I told you so"!
Lol.

Trying to point it out a little much during early days of TW sorta pissed people off for some reason. Bah... I went about it badly. Maybe. Or maybe people are just screwed.

K... I'm rambling. I had a point when I started typing, but it's sorta... um.

Back to mapping fer me.

I'd like to thank myself.... errr shazbot.... heh! I'm glad you had fun on our server last night, if we could populate on the new maps like that every night I would feel right at home in T:V. The word is getting around that the auto download works, albeit with a unsure feeling while all you see is the loading screen, but it does work and running these maps that the community has worked so hard on is a must if we are going to get T:V in the same mode as what each of us liked about Tribes X(x being 1 or 2). So come by MoFo's Casa de Putas or any of the MANY other servers running custom maps and support what the community is doing to make this game successful. /endpeptalk

:D

oh... and GGs to all who were on last night, that had to be one of the best(most fun) pub nights I've had in a long time... maybe since T2! WEWT!

No matter how much I want to agree with this thread, I can't.

T:V is very different from the previous Tribes games no matter how much a map might attempt to simulate the T1 or T2 "feel".

There are big differences in the gameplay mechanics that a map will not/can not change. I won't start listing them since I would be here all day but a map can only go so far. A map won't change the fact that hitting MA's are much easier now in T:V, or a map won't change the fact that you have to disk a mine twice to destroy it.

I have played with many players beta testing many new maps, and no matter how good the map replicates T1 or T2 style, the naysayers will always hold to their opinions that T:V is not Tribes to them.

I do agree that some user made maps are changing the way the game is played and the way skiing feels. I believe this is the aspect of the new maps you are referring to. But if you are trying to turn the heads of the players that are in the camp of T:V is way too easy for them, it won't work because all of the gameplay issues they hate are still there.

For the record, I love T:V and I enjoy the more simplistic approach T:V has taken. I feel T:V is much easier to slip into than any other previous Tribes game to date, yet I feel there is room for years of growth to constantly improve which in lies the heart of Tribes.

I do appreciate the fresh uplifting attitude of this thread.

I pretty much quit playing T:V about 2 months ago and I decided to give it another try last weekend. I hopped on the KGB server because they were playing Scarabrae and I had wanted to try it out. Wouldn't you know it, I played until 4 AM that night and enjoyed every minute of it. We played Scara, DX and Feigned Beliefs and I felt right at home. :D

I hadn't played Tribes until the wee hours of the morning in a LONG time.

Yeah, it was a helluava time until my textures wouldn't load for FeignedBeliefs... I redownloaded the map and replaced the files several times and still couldn't connect. :(

Still, it was fun... and it really did feel like old school Tribes.

Most of the retail T:V maps seem 'odd' to me. They use a lot of gimmicky details (trees here and rocks there and we'll throw in 15 rusted cars for good measure!) that make the map look nice but don't enhance gameplay.

Personally, I liked the simplicity of T1 maps. Most of those maps are straightforward -- a set of bases, an open flag, rolling hills. The straightforward design was largely due to technology limitations but it works for a Tribes game. That kind of simplicity is something I tried to apply to DesertOfDoom and I'm glad to see other mappers are trying to find a balance between 'graphical goodness' and 'gameplay goodness'.

Here's hoping a large number of community-made maps make it into the competition scene.

i'm sorry, you can flame me on this one. i fixed up the map since it had a few issues and wolverine suckered me into giving him the link to the updated version. for now, just delete the map from your files, OR talk to wolv for the download, but i'm gonna hold off on re-releasing it personally until the map pack at the end of the month (what i hope will be the end of the month)...

but this is another excellent thread.

zio, i really do have to partially agree with you. we will never ever re-create tribes 1 or tribes 2. but what we mappers were going for is a more team-based map set rather than the 300m flags, cowboy, grapple fest maps that retail came with. just one "for instance" here, dash, i have cap routes from both sides that remind me a whole lot of T2 classic in terms of gaining speed before the grab, and hell, sometimes i can even DJ off those stands to get a good jump away from the chaseres... but hell, i can still be taken out halfway home by good chasers. these are the more balanced, Tribes-like maps that i think most people are desiring, and its what we're trying to create. so far, i'd say we mappers have done a great job, and i do have to give kudos to the people of the community, any of them who have offered any sort of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, any of them who helped test these maps, hosted them, everything... you can give some credit to just about everyone for the game going this small step forward.

Please don't get ME wrong. I just don't want people to think that a map really is the end all to "fixing" T:V. I think T:V plays and feels fine for me. I accept that it a simplified version of the previous games and I enjoy it for what it is. That was my whole point.

As for what mappers are doing, hell yeah! You guys are doing a great job bringing back the "feel" of the prvious games. Keep it up!
