they probably choked/passed out from the fumes way before the immolation action started

a newspaper article stated the fire marshal's thought it may have started outside, and spread inside and were investigating cause. another person said it might've been a cigarette in the couch.
looks to me like it started in the kitchen, since there is no exterior wall left where the kitchen was, and his room is right above, no walls or roof left in his rooms area.
