How inept is the UN?

The UN has been a complete farce for a long while. Lots of talk, but little action. After reading this story I wouldn't even have faith that these people are capable of folding my laundry.

Saw this on the news this morning, and the quick rundown of it is that after the Prime Minister of Lebanon was assassinated in a motorcade bombing in 2005, the UN security council started an independent investigation on the matter. What followed was a masterful act of feet dragging that basically saw the investigation go nowhere. The real investigative stuff didn't even begin until 2007.

In the midst of all this feet dragging, a Lebanese police officer spent his time doing some actual investigative work and basically uncovered the cellphone network using phone records at the time of the bombing, and all he really used was an excel spreadsheet. The contacts he uncovered linked the people behind the bombing to Hezbollah operatives. Hezbollah is a party which is backed financially by Syria, and the Prime Minister was a staunch opponent of Syrian influence. He reported his findings to the UN just a year after the bombing in 2006.

What did the UN do with this information? They lost his report. In 2008 the Lebanese police officer who had uncovered the network behind the assassination was assassinated himself. It's taken the UN about 5 years to actually piece together the same information that it took 1 man to do, 1 year following the bombing, and actually gave it to them. What's more, is that the journalists who were digging into this report at the CBC asked the UN about the circumstances behind this investigation. The response they got was some angry letters from the UN asking that they hand over all of the documents they had on the investigation. They will of course publish it anyway...

CBC News - World - CBC Investigation: Who killed Lebanon's Rafik Hariri?

Suddenly I'm less terrified of Orbital's NWO.

Cliffs:
-Prime Minister of Lebanon is assassinated
-UN says they'll do a big investigation, which they drag their feet on
-Police officer using excel and phone records cracks the case wide open
-Officer reports his findings
-UN loses the report
-UN eventually figures out this critical information after 5 years
-UN tries to cover their ass

wow who would have thought, an organization that has no jurisdiction in an area that is not exactly pro-UN getting stonewalled. Who would have thought!!! Obviously we need to get rid of the UN, thanks for bringing this damning evidence! Oh no a lost report, obviously every organization and everybody who ever did that don't deserve anything!!

The UN has been extremely beneficial to the international community.

The UN servers as a vehicle to provide much needed assistance to impoverished countries, they allow for international cooperation across a range of economic, political, and security issues, and you are just jealous because you are not a member.

Pretty sure you answered your own question there buddy.

But, If a nation disregards UN backed guidelines/policies (eg - iran continuing with a nuclear program), the UN can provide a means for the entire world to impose punishments that will bring the offending countries in line with the governing policies. This can be a sternly worded letter of condemnation, economic and political sanctions, and ummm...time outs & spankings?

Countries can always do things unilaterally but that may open them up to UN condemnation as well.

Pretty short and simple analogy but if you want to see a microcosm of ANY governing body, watch the movie "The Cove." The money buys the votes of the ones who really shouldn't even be at the adult table at all, and this justifies any action, anywhere, by anyone.

The way to have power, is to take it. - William Tweed.
