Coronavirus Information

March 12, 2020

We understand that many parents and families are concerned about the potential spread of the novel coronavirus virus (COVID-19) in our schools. Things are changing rapidly so we will continue to provide you with timely information based on local, state, and national guidance.

Because there is no evidence yet of community transmission of COVID-19 in San Diego County, the guidance from local public health, and from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and California Department Education, continues to be that closing schools is premature. Although some local colleges and universities have moved to close their campuses, we will continue to follow guidance set forth by public health experts.

Our charge under state law is to stay open as long as our site remains safe for students and staff. As a school district, in addition to our ongoing conversations with public health, we are considering factors such as food insecurity among our students, access to the internet or resources for alternative learning methods, and the impacts for students whose families cannot stay home with them. For a large number of our students, the safest place for them to be is in school. I hope you will support us in making sure our campus is safe by following these guidelines for when to keep your child home from school. Students with respiratory symptoms or fever (>100 F / >37.8 C) should remain home from school and other activities until they have had no fever for 24 hours, without fever-reducing medication. In addition, all respiratory symptoms must be fully resolved or seven days have passed since the onset of symptoms and your child’s symptoms have been improving (whichever is earlier). If your child typically has a cough from underlying, known diseases like asthma, allergies, they may attend school if there is no new symptom.

Additionally, the CDPH has issued new guidelines regarding mass gatherings that our district will be following. We’ll be communicating in more detail about how these guidelines will impact our activities as soon as possible. CDPH defines a gathering as any event or convening that brings together people in a single room or single space at the same time, such as an auditorium, stadium, arena, large conference room, meeting hall, cafeteria, or any other indoor or outdoor space. These new guidelines include:

Large gatherings that include 250 people or more will be postponed or canceled. This includes gatherings such as concerts, conferences, and professional, college, and school sporting events.
Smaller gatherings held in venues that do not allow social distancing of six feet per person should be postponed or canceled. This includes gatherings in crowded auditoriums, rooms, or other venues.
Gatherings of individuals who are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should be limited to no more than 10 people. This includes gatherings such as those at retirement facilities, assisted living facilities, developmental homes, and support groups for people with health conditions.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is advising any students who have traveled to China, Iran, Italy, or South Korea (Level 3 Travel Health Notice countries) to stay home for 14 days from the time they left one of these areas, monitor their health, and practice social distancing. Please visit the CDC’s website for details about this directive.

We encourage you to stay informed of the situation by regularly checking updates from San Diego County Public Health Services and the CDC.

South Bay Union will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. We thank you for your cooperation and support.

About this virus

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause symptoms of colds. However, this is a “novel” virus, originating in China in late 2019 (hence the name, 2019 Novel Coronavirus). Until recently, this particular strain of coronavirus circulated among animals only. Now it appears to have spread to humans, and can be spread between humans. The abbreviated term for this virus is: COVID-19.

Current Understanding of Virus

Symptoms most commonly include: fever with cough or shortness of breath; some people have fewer or no symptoms at all. Headache, sore throat, and runny nose also occur with this virus.
Children may also present with no fever, mild diarrhea and vomiting. They have fewer symptoms and problems.
Spread is most likely from droplets (cough and sneezing).
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers this a serious public health threat, but with health risk from this virus to be low at this time in most locations.
It is not yet known whether people carrying the virus, but have no symptoms, can spread the virus to others.
Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear in as few as 2 days, or as long as 14 days, after exposure.
Most people with this infection will recover on their own. There is no specific treatment for COVID-19 yet.
For patients who are more severely ill, hospitals can provide supportive care.

Basic Prevention of Virus Spread

Make sure all family members are up-to-date with their flu shots.
Promote basic hygiene:
Any coughing or sneezing should be directed into ones sleeve (inside elbow), rather than into hands or the air.
Wash hands after using and handling used tissues, after blowing nose, before/after eating, and after toilet use.
Wash for 20 seconds with soap, rub between fingers and under nails; and then rinse and dry. (May use alcohol (60%+) hand gel if sinks are not readily available).
Schools should encourage hand washing (by students and staff) through education, scheduled time for handwashing, and the provision of adequate supplies.
Avoid rubbing your own eyes, nose and mouth.
Do not share utensils, cups etc.
Stay home when sick.
Avoid contact with those who are sick.
Wearing of face masks by students and staff members. Wearing of masks in public is not currently being recommended for Americans by the CDC nor by our local public health department. It will be discouraged in schools. Handwashing is considered the best protection from infectious diseases.
School District Plans if Coronavirus is Spreading Locally

The South Bay health team and administration are working collaboratively with the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (i.e. local public health department). South Bay will follow all directives to reduce exposure in school. It is the public health department that decides on quarantines, school closures, and exclusion policy, not the School District.

Travel

Many students may travel with their families during the Spring Break. Please check this website before traveling.

Not shutting down yet. Teacher friend's say attendance is way down, (i'll let you imagine what parents are still sending).
My wife substitute teaches and her phone is ringing off the hook for her to work, but we're in Mazatlan and she wouldn't go in anyway... teacher's calling in,,, bet it's only a matter of days 'till San Diego calls it. I mean the area colleges are calling it, I wonder why $chools wouldn't.

Looks like they are cancelling all events with over 500 ppl here.

They cancelled the F1 Grand Prix this weekend. Stupid thing is, today they had the whole crowd queued up at the gates and kept them locked out for over an hour while they decided what to do. If they didn't have corona before, they surely will have it now after being packed in together like that. Would have been safer to let everyone in so they can spread out.

dickheads, world has gone mad

no shit, if you need anything go and buy extra now.

cereal, rice, pasta, tinned food, crackers, stock, flour, sugar all that sort of stuff is basically gone

ppl have lost their fucking minds

I just went up the shops and came out with two fishing lures

(and a 24 pack of toilet paper, it was like winning lotto, warehouse dude just came up and asked if I wanted some, he found a last pack in the back of the warehouse and I just happened to be walking past the doorway - ka ching!)

i dont get the toilet paper buying up

i bought a 12 pack when i moved to my new place and i think im on my third roll

like there is wood everywhere locally they gonna keep making it.

Great, starting Monday all schools are closed until further notice here in France. My 6 year old couldn't be happier...

I'm still wondering why there is so much panic about this, the data does not seem to hold up:

Mortality Rate as of Feb. 20 in China (findings from the Report of the WHO-China Joint Mission)
The Report of the WHO-China Joint Mission published on Feb. 28 by WHO [12] is based on 55,924 laboratory confirmed cases. The report notes that "The Joint Mission acknowledges the known challenges and biases of reporting crude CFR early in an epidemic" (see also our discussion on: How to calculate the mortality rate during an outbreak). Here are its findings on Case Fatality Ratio, or CFR (the mortality rate):

"As of 20 February, 2,114 of the 55,924 laboratory confirmed cases have died (crude fatality ratio [CFR: 3.8%) (note: at least some of whom were identified using a case definition that included pulmonary disease).

The overall CFR varies by location and intensity of transmission (i.e. 5.8% in Wuhan vs. 0.7% in other areas in China).

In China, the overall CFR was higher in the early stages of the outbreak (17.3% for cases with symptom onset from 1-10 January) and has reduced over time to 0.7% for patients with symptom onset after 1 February. " [12]

The Joint Mission noted that the standard of care has evolved over the course of the outbreak.

Many more people would have had the virus and either not been tested or not even realised they had it, rates would be much lower than actually reported.
