[Kurayami] Syrian (Russian) new Fighters...

What role did the ruskies build the MIG-31 for exactly?
Like I said, it was the successor of the MiG-25.
The MiG-25 was built specifically in response to the XB-70 program.

The XB-70 was supposed to be a mach 3 high altitude nuclear bomber and it made the Russians very nervous. It was eventually cancelled (ironically due mostly to the fact that Russian SAM technology was deemed to be too much of a threat to put a new high altitude bomber into production.) The Russians continued to develop the MiG-25 as an interceptor, the MiG-31 being the ultimate result.

The MiG-25/31 wound up spending most of the cold war trying to run down SR-71s since it was the only plane in existence that even had half a chance of catching them.

Today I imagine the Russians would employ them to intercept bombers. They'd be a real nuisance to escorts because of their speed.
The MiG-29 and Su-27 are better suited for going toe-to-toe with other fighters.

The Russians offer rides in MiG-31s, BTW.
$30,000 buys you accomodations and a few hours of supersonic flight at the edge of space.

So what role would a country like Syria or Iran be trying to fill with this plane then? Purely defensive?

Pretty much. It's not like it's of much use for a first strike.

But it would be a relatively cheap ace in the hole with some good pilots. The only advantage it has over anything the Israelis fly is speed, but if that's used intelligently it could make a difference (though Syria would ultimately lose regardless.)

What aircraft do the jews use against ground targets and how much of a threat would the MiG-31 really be to it?

In all reality, the Syrians would probably need more like 40 of those instead of just 5.

F-15I
F-16
AH-1
AH-64

They also have a whole bunch of A-4s and F-4Es that have supposedly been removed from service but could probably be refielded in a pinch.

How good are the new Mig29OVR (Thrust vectoring Mig) compared to the Raptors?

Edit:

about that one winged aircraft, that would have been 100% avionics that saved him there. An E block aircraft with digital engine control probably pumped more fuel into the right engine to compensate for lack of drag on the left hand side.

See the difference computers make in these machines?

the other thing I was going to say is that y'all had better get used to no pilots anymore, b/c I can't see any way they would make another fighter jet past the JSF or F-22 when UCAV's are so much better. sorry

Does seem like a wierd choice for Syria to be acquiring.. Mig-29, Su-27 (as Kura has already said) would make a lot more sense to be dealing with the 15s and 16s of Israel. Maybe they got a particularly good deal?

Regardless, buying 5 of them isn't like it's redefining their strategic operations. It's really just an additional 'special purpose' kinda weapon. That said, the relatively low number means less aircrews needed, means more training for them.. they can afford to have elite crews.

That Israeli quote is just the usual sabre-rattling... Ask an right-wing Israeli, and any arab that's even looking at a particularly pointy rock on the ground is just asking for war. No surprise someone's spouting the rhetoric over that.

Syria already operates the Mig-25, anyway. This is really just an upgrade.

This allows Syria better options against well trained pilots. Why try and better the Israelies when you can try a different tactic that would guarantee some success? Be interesting to see if they get any Mig-35s

been reading some youtube comments about the stealth and radar...does this have any truth?

12-20 km? The newest MIG-31 Radar, the Zaslon-AM, can engage targets in a range of 280-320 km, also Stealth ones. Thats no problem, and the F-22 is not as sealth as u may think. No problem for russian SAM´s like S-300V/S-300MPU2 or the S-400 system.

But the Kolchuga Radar pwn´s everything! 700-800 km,able to track EVERY target.

zeroyon04
having a lower RCS means that detection range is shortened. The best russian radars will pick up the F-22 on radar at about 12km out. Any further out and it will be invisible.
Also, you should look at the sea based x-band radar

Thats bullshit.

Read something about the Radar the S-400 is using, or the Zaslon-AM or the Ukraine/Russian Kolchuga-System.

The Stealth-Theory the US-Americans are using was invented by a russian in 1971. Its old and it does not work now a days against highly developed countries, with a powerful military, like russia.

Zaslon-AM, Kolchuga and the Radar the S-400 is using, read about it and u will recognize that the old Stealthtechnology is not up-to-date.

Also on the subject of missile lock, I never remember hearing about this rumor...

besides that the mig has another feature, cant recall where i read this, but due to its high manuverability , and of course dependign on the pilots flight creativity the mig35 can "disapear" from misile targeting for a short period of time, which is a great advantage in a dog fight...-excuse the terrible typing-
