24. Ben Folds Five - Brick (4:31)
28. coldplay - 04 - the scientist (5:09)
35. Eric Clapton - Tears in heaven (4:39)
110. Verve Pipe - The Freshman (4:28)

ignore the numbers, its from my playlist.

Some of the other songs are good and some even have sad subjects but the ones that I know on that list are not depressing/really sad.

Tears in Heaven is an obvious pick, Brick always comes up in these threads, the scientist is pretty sad and The Freshman is really, really melancholy and I never could figure out why. Some sort of "loss of innocence" type of thing, I guess.

One of the all-time great 'sad songs' would be "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. Ignore the Pearl Jam version.

"In the Ghetto" by Elvis is another really sad and classic song.

Except the Pearl Jam version actually sounds sad, whereas Wilson's version sounds like a techno song.

I can't listen to that song without laughing, because the Cartman version always comes in my head. ;)

Gary Jules - Mad World (from Donnie Darko)

dont know band - One is the Loneliest Number

Three Dog Night. For One is the Lonliest Number, that is.

Hallelujah has been covered by a score of artists. Others who have covered it are Bob Dylan and Jeff Buckley (whose version I like best so far). Almost all of the songs on Buckley's album 'Grace' would fit in this thread.

Beck - Lost Cause

The meaning of that song changed a crapload when i realized that he was saying "baby you're a lost cause" not "baby, im a lost cause."

"you're" and "i'm" are not really similar, but i guess i was hearing what i wanted to hear.

I like it personally because it can be pretty uplifting at the same time

I can't listen to that song without laughing, because the Cartman version always comes in my head. ;)

Blasphemy.

On both counts.

Didn't know that Cartman did a spoof of "In the Ghetto." As catchy as the South Park songs are, I can imagine it gets stuck in your head.

The Pearl Jam version IS sad. I just heard the original first and it is better anyways.

Elliot Smith's stuff always comes up in these threads.

Most of Harry Chapin's stuff but especially "Cat's in the Cradle."

Richard Marx. The song is maybe called "Hazard." I always thought that song was really, really sad as a little kid, though his other shit is not great.
