They are already starting to release movies in 2D in "limited theaters", with 3D being the mass release.

Why in my day, they didn't even have tvs, we had to trudge 15 miles through rain or shine or snow to even get close to a neighbor that had one or go to town once a week when they were showing a picture film on the bigscreen. /damn kids these days

I actually used to live in a town that only had 1 movie theater. They only had 1 movie as well, the 'new release' was usually a month behind all the other movie theaters as well.
