[For teh Limeys]How did California even manage to accumulate $24 billion in debt?

the state elected a roided up german action star. I mean sure he can fight the predator but did you expect him to be fiscally responsible?

(i realize the problems started well before the governator)

Many reasons us CA residents are screwed:

1. Proposition-based spending initiatives
2. Illegal immigration
3. Bloated government

So when is someone going to answer the question without fancy political words?

How did they accumulate 24 billion dollars in debt?

the best part is when the people vote for $50 billion in new spending but decline new taxes. Basic math eludes these people.

in all seriousness, this is the real reason why. although i am sure there are other contributing factors other people have previously mentioned, this is the main culprit

Yes, and yes.

We're supposed to be all sorts of intelligent and awesome here in CA. But for some fucking retarded reason, we vote to spend billions of dollars for a tram to take us from Disneyland to Las Vegas, and then vote down every single tax increase or money reallocation to get the proper funding for the useles shit.

People want all this wizz cool stuff and tons of beni's for their citizens but balk at paying for it.

Weak legislators don't want to hurt the feelings of their constituents so they deliver teh cake and let them eat it too.

You can't blame a lack of new taxes on a budget crisis. A new tax might fix a budget, but its not the cause of a problem. Big Worm listed the actual problems.

Its not $24B in debt, its a budget shortfall, currently the budget is 24B more than what they predict they will bring in.

The same way any other government does, spending more than it takes in (see: ballot propositions, prop 13, spending mandates, budget rules requiring supermajority to pass, + a nasty recession which kills of income and property tax recipts, etc....)

CA's budget has been north of 100 billion in recent years, so 24 billion deficit, while immense, is more understandable than in a much smaller state or country.
