New York Police Department: Drone came within 800 feet of police helicopter; 2 people arrested | Star Tribune

NEW YORK — Police have arrested two people for operating a drone over the George Washington Bridge that came within 800 feet of a police helicopter.

They say the helicopter pilot spotted the small unmanned aircraft near the bridge at 12:21 a.m. Monday. The drone continued to circle the bridge, forcing the chopper to change course to avoid it.

The pilot notified the 34th Precinct after observing the drone land on a parked vehicle.

When police arrived, they recovered two drones with remote controls.

Police arrested Wilkins Mendoza and Remy Castro, both of Manhattan, on reckless endangerment charges. Information about their lawyer wasn't immediately available.

The Federal Aviation Administration hasn't set standards for certifying the safety of civilian drones, and efforts to provide them regular access to U.S. skies face significant hurdles.

sounds like a pissy pilot who couldnt take a good shit or had his wife lay into him for not fixing that broken sink just wanted to take it out on someone.

So there's no law governing the use of drones....yet they are being charged with reckless endangerment. I wonder how they intend to prove the drone pilot was acting recklessly?

800 feet bro.

It's New York. They'll make something up.

I'm guessing 800ft is an FAA regulation. I just thought that was a really arbitrary number to try to apply to a 2ft drone, especially considering the pilot was probably operating his aircraft within 800 feet of the bridge... in which case there were also a shit ton of people, cars, and dangerous structures within that column of airspace. Are they being charged too?

No, because the fucking pilot put himself and his aircraft in that space. The danger is implied.

But it's New York and they won't have any problems finding some gung-ho prosecutor to press charges on these 2 dudes with an R/C helicopter. Fuck NY.

fuck the government.

i have felt more unamerican in my thoughts in the last 5 years than i ever thought possible.
