Spoiler

so the launch manifest for SLS looks to be a 25km slingshot past the moon, then some NEO stuff to an asteroid maybe, then a hopeful launch to Europa, then a mars sample return, then some other mars thing, before 2025.

now if some of the projects remain/get funded is another thing entirely.

im glad the comet lander had it's own thread, but now that thread is gone and disappeared and no one seems to give a shit about what actually happened

the lander hit the comet and bounced a KM into space, landed again, bounced again, and finally landed in the shadow of a cliff, one leg in the air, with barely any sunlight hitting it.
they werent sure if it could even drill, but figured out it could.
they somehow repositioned the thing to get a bit more sun to keep operations going thru Friday evening
it drilled, and completed it's first science sequence phase totally, then sent the data to earth, then shut down due to lack of power

it hit it's mark straight on but the lack of harpoons fucked it up
even so they got a lot of good science out of the probe after ten years in space. and it may turn back on if the sun ever hits it better

Philae wins battle to send key data ahead battery depletion | NASASpaceFlight.com

im sad cuz it was supposed to be there for months, sending back data on the state of the comet as the sun burns it up
oh well

Further design work on the new flame deflector and flame trench designs should be finalized by early 2014, allowing for construction the following year.

Just over two years later, the first SLS will christen the new flame trench, when the Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle (HLV) makes its debut launch on what is currently Exploration Mission -1 (EM-1) - although breaking news on L2 notes this opening flight is in the process of being replaced with different – more ambitious – mission.
thank god
hopefully the first flight of the SLS and orion is a cool mission that actually accomplishes something
