He heard drilling and went inside (door was ajar) and was like "what's up!" and Steve shot him in the leg. If the security guard did in fact discover the plot before Paddock finished his preparation, triggering events prematurely, he may have prevented a much larger tragedy.

How interesting that Paddock foiled his own plan by doing something careless, like triggering a fire alarm door. These doors are usually brightly marked with a warning that the door will trigger an alarm when opened. How could you make that mistake after all the effort leading up to that moment?
