Feeling hot hot hot

The PTO went out yesterday after a spirited mowing session. The PTO system turns the blades on and off, its an electric clutch controlled by a switch and electric safeties. The switch goes bad enough on these they make an improved part. Ordered a new switch yesterday and looked at it today.

The damn PTO Clutch went out. Not cheap, and I needed it today. I had planned on hot wiring it until the new switch arrived. A working PTO clutch unit came with the burned up mower I picked up last fall.

Had to get creative removing the old one. Just one bolt and the plug, but it was siezed on the engine shaft.

The locating pin that keeps it from spinning with the engine output shaft was nearly worn through. Put some extra material in there and slapped it back together. Only had a few little oily grass fires on the mower deck. I'll attack the oil leak tomorrow.

Oh, and this happened just before I started looking at the PRO. The lug bolts thread into stamped metal and I lost a few somewhere, but no worries. Crammed some grade 8 books in with a nut on the back side.

Tore the flywheel and shroud off to get to the crazy oil leak. Any oil leak in these Kawasaki engines is most likely the breather cover. At any rate it was coming from the top of the engine so I got in there to look.

Fresh oil from yesterdays use

Delicious! Looks like a murder scene, but with crass clippings and oil.

Breather cover is under the intake, that has to come off.

The breather cover removed. Cleaned up with brake cleaner and compressed air. Shit went everywhere.

The breather cover.

No one local had the breather cover gasket so I black RTVed the shit out of it and reassembled. I'll order along with the crank seal and do that later.

rtv will get u thru

i saw a dood @ school use rtv + rag to rebuild an entire corner of the coolant reservoir for his C10 (apparently the replacement was too expensive after he'd dropped $thousand$ on engine and trans rebuild parts)

it worked

i'm p sure the dood re-enrolled b/c it was like a midlife crisis clubhouse 4 him

How long do you think the RTV will last, Mitch?
Also, do you think he could have used Permatex high-temp red instead of the RTV?
C'mon Mitch. Take the bait.

While it did look like a sewer backed up in there, I doubt midxe knows anything not related to sanitary sewers.

Finally got the right tires on it. Traction for days, and the deck hangs level.

Midxe is always invited and welcome to our oxidation nation.

Aluminum will oxidize, just not as pretty.

Does it got gas in it?

Put some in and it went all over the floor.

Pulled the seat and fenders off. Just 4 bolts, the cruise lever knob, and the go pedal linkagewere all that need to be removed. I could have left the seat on the fenders.

Looks like a crime scene in there.

Found a few interesting things in there with the fenders off...

Angle iron bolted across a break in the frame around the rear axle.

Another break on the other side under the gas tank.

Another broken transmission mount point.

Must be the giant tires they put on at the factory, the big engine, and light weight frame..

I'll tackle the broken frame another day, now that I know it comes apart super easy.

The last tractor I took apart, the entire steering/ control tower had to come off first. What a nightmare.
