Xbox and self written CDs

Someone told me that the enwer version of xboxes are able to play self-written cd, without any modifacations.
1.Is this true?
2.If I do need to modify it in order to play burned CDs, will I still be able to play DVDs?

I need this infomation 'cause I'm buying one tomorrow.

i heard of a way but it requires a dvd burner which i don't have so i can't verify or deny whether the method works.

i just rent games instead of warezing them.

XBOXs that have samsung DVDroms can read CDRs, most all of the XBOXs can read CDRWs. You still need a mod chip to have it play back ups
