thinking of playing EVE

since my wow account got banned and i am boycotting it, i looked around at other MMOs and came across eve. looks fun, pvp, etc, star wars-ish. i read the newbie thread and all, but it might be a bit outdated, so can anyone give me a few newb tips?

i see talk of people making tons and tons of ISK/building a titan/etc, should i even start? or is it too late?

Its never too late to start. The way the skills are set up, you can specialize and max out skills for a certain ship and setup pretty quickly, and be just as effective in that ship as someone who has played 3 years.

Take Cuda for example, he started about 6 months behind most of us, and is flying more advanced ships than some of us already because of specialization.

I have one char that I didn't have much focus on. He's OK in combat since I've been able to get more focus, but not great.

I have another char on which I focused half my time training gunnery skills, and my god does it show. she can't fly very many ships, but the ones she can fly she flies extremely well.

They key is focus.

There's the initial training that you need to make money and train faster. That's all in the guides. After you get your money making battleship, then you pick another ship that you think would be fun and train every skill related to that ship. Once that ship is trained up, pick another one and train for that one. Like Mav said, as long as you focus on a ship at a time, you can catch up really fast. The biggest thing is just to blindly listen to the vets and you'll be fine.

i went with a 9/3/9/9/9 caldari asian chick or whatever... what should i focus for first? battleship? i liked the look of a cloaked ship, or maybe an interdictor or something... not sure really though, so many options.

I'd suggest ships but I like weird things in the game that tend away from shooting and blowing stuff up.

I would recommend either an assault frigate or an interceptor. From there you can determine your fighting style and work up a training plan iwth evemon.

Battleships will allow you to take out large spawns and make some good cash. Downside is that you really, really want to not just be able to fly the ship but fly it well otherwise you're just throwing isk down the can. Start with frigs and cruisers. Find your feet then start running.

FYI cloakers are really only good for pvp and don't have much redeeming value for npc'ing. Plus most cloakers do crap all for damage. Interdictors are great ships but again, they're almost exclusively a pvp ship. Stick with frigs and cruisers for now.

Oh yeah, amen on the Angry Canuk thing.

thanks to cuda for the million isk, got me off my feet and now im sitting pretty in a destroyer, just training up various things right now to make life easier. although i must say i enjoyed the frigate i was using for a while (kestrel). i enjoyed sitting out at 10km and blowing them away before they could come any closer.

is there anything like a kestrel later on? big missile boats? or are missiles weak later on? thanks for the help all :]

missles are teh pwn for Missions. in pvp alot of people dont like them because if you are at long range they take forever to get there but they always hit. if you are in range

kestrel -> caracal -> raven

Raven makes ratting/missioning really easy.

Missile boats get discarded at the T2 BS level just because by the time your missiles reach someone they'll have warped off or you'll have warped off. You can outrun missiles as well.

Is there still a free trial available? Or do you have to signup with a credit card first? I'm still heavily invested in Wow, so I would just like to try Eve without going through the process of actually opening an account.

This is what I came here to ask. Is there still a free trial of this game available?
