So I just got one of these things (typing on it now) is there some sort of hack I should be installing on it or what? Obviously I dontfeel like paying for apps or any of that bullshit. Its an Acer Iconia 10 inch

there's a setting to allow non-market apps to be installed, should be under application settings

The market has the .10 apps for 10 days but I dont know how many days are left.
Also Amazon has a free app of the day. Every now and again you will catch a good one.
I also subscribe to the Transformer fan club. Has the best features for a tablet IMO.
