If I'm not mistaken multiple people can get the scepter, but only one can crack it on the gong to open the gate. Others can still ring the gong, just nothing will happen.

make sure you are there at the end of the gate opening event. i forget if it's 8 hours or 10. anyway, all the npcs go to the gate and a shit ton of anubis dudes spawn for like the last hour. the npcs keep you healed and everything, so just tag everything you can. 250 rep a kill. i ended up getting over 40k rep that night (I killed shit for about 4 hours including the last hour event). It's a huge headstart on your rings.
