Sound is eliminated on some software titles when played on the PS3, while some other titles do not play on the latest machine at all.

The Sankei Shimbun daily said on Tuesday about 200 PS and PS2 titles are likely to have compatibility problems.

emulation is problematic by nature, youre running proprietary software on hardware it wasnt designed for.

The beauty of next-gen consoles is they can be flashed with new software and problems such as this can be fixed at a later date. Which sony has said it will do.

its not all emulation though. the ps3 has ps2 hardware in it.

i know for a fact that it has the emotion engine hardware in it for backwards compatibility. i dont know what (if any) hardware it is missing.
they did the same thing with the ps1 hardware in the ps2. there were certain games that didnt work correctly.
