[Possible OFN] Mount and Blade

Searched and didn't find anything.

One of the things that pissed me off about CRPGs ever since the genre was invented was that the combat always boiled down to a mindless abstract clickfest. Want to kill a dragon? Click Click Click Click *Healing Potion* Click Click Click Done. No devs even bothered trying to make give it any more depth than occasionally also clicking "power attack".

This game pulls off decent medieval combat. If you want that lance to skewer someone, you have get your horse going pretty fast and then hit them with the point. If you want to throw an axe into someones face, you need to give lead and take into account projectile drop. If you want to hit someone with your sword, you have to time it/choose direction so that they can't parry effectively. Your character doesn't do everything for you. The mounted combat mechanics are particularly satisfying - having a horse lets you go really fast, but they turn slowly and make it harder to fight while standing still. So you ride past people and make a really good swing and keep going, then turn around to do it again. The game does have a fair few problems though, the main one being mediocre graphics. Another bonus is that they actually put in most of the good suggestions people make on the forums.

Here's a quick rundown of what you can do:

Fight on foot with any medieval weapon (though lances suck when you don't have a horse), including swords, axes, bows, crossbows, spears, throwing axes etc.

Fight from a horse with anything, though crossbows don't work to well as you need to get off your horse to reload them. You can be a mounted archer with a bow.

Fight in a war between vikings and knights. Unfortunately, nothing ever really happens in this war, but the quests do give you a fair bit of money. You can pick whichever side you like.

Be a trader. Different goods sell for different amounts in different towns, so you buy cheap, sell high and dodge/kill bandits along the way.

Hire a band of mercenaries who gain experience for themselves. They usually start out as peasants or militia, and there's a tech tree for upgrading them. In the end, you get knights, elite infantry and marksmen.

Loot trade caravans. If you do it to much people send knights after you.

Join tournaments.

If anyone's interested, there's a demo here and the full version only costs $11.
