If you really want to fit a miner1 or miner2 to a mammoth or iteron 4 or 5, then go right ahead. Mammoths (by the time you can fly them) have a skill bonus to give you more than 6k m3, and with 4 tech1 expanders, you have 13k m3.

Miner1s will give you 40 m3 per minute, so it would take 327 minutes, or 5.5hrs, to fill the mammoth. Miner2s will give you 60 m3 per minute, so it would take 218 minutes, or 4.6 hrs to fill it. And you'll only be able to mine veldspar or scordite.

Just for a note, with a retriever and 2 strip miners, I can do that much in half an hour. Plus I can go into lower securities and be protected by my drones, so I can safely mine in 0.5 and access kernite and pyroxeres.

Your best bet for mining alone or afk is using a class V hauler and doing it in .9-1.0. If you want to grab some scripts to auto switch ore into a jetcan,then you can do that. but beware,as you will be ganked by people if your caught. They have ways of tricking it into fighting them,thus making you at fault.
Your best bet is to just not do it. I cant tell you how many times i've been ransomed or just out right ganked mining in low sec space.

I mine in a Megathron with 7 miner 2's fitted. I just pop into a belt, unleash the 5 wasps and set about mining Crokite. My drones will kill all npc ships coming into the belt including 1.2 mil battleships. And the way my Mega is setup the NPCs can never break my armor tank unless a triple BS spawn shows up. Can't afk mine like this but you can make a shitpotfull of isk if you spend 2 to 4 hours a day doing it this way. And you can do it all by your lonesome. Just have to have a hauler that you can jump into once your can gets full.

We have a large POS that I keep my hauler and Mega in and its complete with an intensive refining array, so I'm a little better off than most when it comes to ninja mining. A few huge/large cans anchored in a safe spot where you can park your hauler serves the purpose almost as well. If I spend 2 to 4 hours a day mining like this I make a half bil in Zydrine a week. Which is more than I make ratting. problem is I can never spend more than 4 to 5 hours a week mining or I go batshit crazy.

Apocs and geddons do as well if not better mining this way.

Yea, i did quite a bit of mining my first week in 0.0 until i just started killing rats today. I dont mind mining. It's amazing cash (im at around 5.8-6m an hour which is amazing for me). I've used a simple Osprey plus a badger and some Miner Is. Obviously moving beyond that helps but it was a good start...

As for 0.5 or higher, the best bet certainly was to go for omber spawns from missions.

"Portal of War" (lvl2 mission) = OMBER
"tech secrets 1" lvl 2 50k omber = OMBER
"human cattle" lvl2&3 90k units = OMBER
"gurista extra" lvl 3 bonus 10k omber = OMBER
"massive attack" lvl 3, 3rd pocket 75k omber = OMBER
"massive attack" lvl3 need a guard = OMBER
"downing the slavers" lvl3&4 400k units (7 days) = OMBER
"in the midst of deadspace" part 1 lvl4 90k units = OMBER
"in the midst of deadspace" part 3 lvl4 90k units = OMBER
"angel exravaganza" lvl4 4 roids = OMBER
 
I'm going to do a retriever with strip miner 2s....unless it takes me several more days to get out there. Only 8 days until covetor.

Honestly, if i keep playing Eve i can see buying a 2nd account and training it for mining. The idea is to have an account that could basically BUY my subscription for me with a small amoung of hours of mining per month.

I havent done all the math, but seems to me that with 4-6 weeks of devoted training to mining and you'd be able to make perhaps 30-40 million an hour with proper facilities/system, especially if working with 2-3 other people (in 0.0 space).

That means you could effectively pay for both Eve accounts with a small amount of time per month.
