microphone help

I am a noob when it comes to this stuff so any help you can give would be good
When i plug in a mic, whatever it picks up i can hear on my speakers. It is annoying as fuck. I tried to use google talk to have a voice conversation with a friend and hearing myself on my speakers as i talk was stupid. Is there any way to change that?

I dont know what information you would need but i have an msi motherboard with onboard sound, and the sound card says it is realtek ac97.
 
i can hear my own mic while wearing headphones... and muting the mic well.. mutes the mic, ie it does not function.
 
a HA, thanks for the help, you lead me in the right direction i believe. I muted it in 'volume control' but 'sounds and audio device properties-> audio-> sound recording-> volume' it was set to cdrom, i changed that to microphone and it stays muted to my speakers but still allows me to use the microphone
