[long] this is the reason I play this game!

This is a story about escaping from a gatecamp. My heart is still pumping as I type this so bear with me.

I was on the way back from hauling my last load of precious loot to empire on a seldom used back road. This road had been quiet all morning, dotted with friendlies along the 20+ system route, as I strolled jump to jump to and from my destination. Along the route at the empire/0.0 junction, I notice a frigate with a State War Academy two week old pilot sitting 100km from the gate on the empire side of the junction. Interesting, but not an uncommon sight in this game where noobs stay in empire and never cross over to 0.0.

I jump through to the 0.0 side, and continue along the quiet highway until I get into the next system. As I jump, I see 2 ravens sitting 70km out, and an ishkur and crow waiting to tackle me. Damn those neutral SWA scouts!

Now I had just trained up Cloaking the day before and happen to have had a cloaking device installed on my industrial minutes before the first run. As my jump cloak wears off, I quickly hit the cloaking device, praying that it works. They only caught a glimpse of me, but it was enough to start trolling with their drones out. Making almost perfect grid line passes trying to ferret me out, these guys were not giving up easily. Closer and closer they come, minutes ticking away, with their first passes coming as close as 10km. Not happy with the results, the ishkur starts to troll in orbit around gate moving in a spiral outward, hoping to get lucky. Meanwhile his buddy continues the gridline trolling, coming closer and closer to me, each pass hoping they are about to hit the jackpot.

The downside to device cloaking is that any object that comes within 2km of you will break the cloak, and these guys were moving as close as 4-5km with each pass. The adrenaline is pumping and as I begin to accept my fate of the inevitable, a glimpse of hope named Vlasic shows up in the system to assist. While at first he tries to distract them, they aren't biting at all. At this point the crow is now in between me and the entrance gate, and the ishkur is between me and the exit gate.

"Align to this planet, I have a safe spot for you" displays on the comms link. That is great, but how am I gonna get out of scrambling range of these fast ships and make it to warp speed in time? Waiting for the right moment, time slowly ticking by, I held my breath, reciting the next moves in my head. Tens of minutes later, with the ishkur and the crow now 22km and 26km away respectively, I hit the decloak, afterburner, and warp to member with perfect precision. Catching both tacklers off guard, I enter warp seconds later while they desperately try to scramble me, but alas, they are out of range. Warping to my saviour, the following comes across the local comms link:

[17:54:32] Arthegon > mandrake grrrrr
[17:54:49] Mandrake Knight >
[17:54:50] Zimi Vlasic > =)
[18:07:04] Mandrake Knight > cya lamers, nice try

With a little bit of finesse, Vlasic pulls an inline safespot out, and I warp to the exit gate, much to the dismay of the big fishes who were hoping they caught a meal.

The duration of this story was about 30-35 minutes, and is by far the most white knuckled adrenaline pumping story I have to date.

cliffs:

lamer pirates trap me at a gate while i am cloaked
about 30-35 minutes transpire while they try to find me
Vlasic saves the day with a safespot and I escape unharmed

I had a similar story bringing up a Racen one time.

I too had just finished training cloaking, and fitted up with stabs for the trip up, along with a smartbomb and a cloak. Making it through EC safely, and on into EWOK, with little to no reports of hostiles in the intel channels, it looked like another leisurely trip into deep 0.0. As I jump into X-70, my overview fills up with reds, and the worst kind. It's a BoB camp.

Not waiting for my cloak to wear off and give me away too easily, I click to align and mash F1 as fast as possible. Their tacklers got just enough of me to get a bead and approach fast. Accepting the inevitable, I hover over the smartbomb key waiting for them to decloak me. As they get on top of me, I see the cloaking device shut off. I immediately initiate warp and fire off the smartbomb. My first attempt to warp fails, but I'm gaining speed. One of the tacklers, deep into armor backs off, and I hit warp again. I'm free!

I made it to the destination gate unfollowed, and made it safely home.

So there I was in a massive gang of about 80 pilots, 45 of which were in battleships. We were an unstoppable force! We had made our way about 20 jumps into enemy space when our scout happens to notice the enemy fleet of about 140, of which 70+ are battleships. Badly outnumbered and out gunned we make a stand at the gate where they are soon to jump in, our battleships are 120km off the gate, and our support is ready to die directly on top of it. Local quickly spikes from 80 to over 200. The first enemy BS unlcloaks and is called primary.Even with my overview set to show only enemy BS's it quickly fills from the top to the bottom of my screen. Our support is vaporized instantly as we continue to fire on them from afar. The engagement lasts only a minute or two as we are completely overwhelmed and forced to warp to a safespot. We lost 4 battleships and took out 6 before retreating, however our support was squished completely. With no chance of victory, our fleet logs off leaving me forced to make long posts on the forums. I'll have to find out how this one comes out tommorow.

I'll tell the story of my first fleet op since everybody is story telling. I hadn't even trained up to use a mwd yet and was out as a tackler. It was me, an inty, and bunch of BS's in our little group. The inty was out scouting and I was setting instas for the BS's. I didn't miss a single insta on the way to the FE head quarters. We get to the headquarters and the inty and I are sitting outside their station. A Raven pops out and we wait to see what he does. He docks back in the station. A Domi pops out and we wait on him.

The drones pop out and he goes after the inty. I fly in with three points of scram on him so he's caught now. The BS's all warp in on us and the Domi goes pop. We get the hell out back to our safe spot and then local jumps by around 40. We had about 15 in our group so we were way outnumbered. We logged for 20 minutes, came back on and local had dropped. We ran so fast out of there and back home.

I find that being a chicken is the best way. Just wait till 55th second before you warp away from a gate camp. Alot of times, they'll just jump on past you.

I went back to the system an hour later, and the pirates were still camping the gate. This wasn't a roving band.

I poked the hornet's nest tonight =)

Me in a heavy plated blaster thorax, being chased by 2 interceptors, a tempest, 3 ravens, 2 megathrons, and I got away without a scratch =D

EVERYONE SHOULD TRAIN EVASIVE MANEUVERING 5. It's the only reason I got away.

Engaging 15 F-E noobs in frigs with my Scorpion with a few other ships sitting in a safe spot aligned to me for backup, and watching 4 of them and their pods vaporize as I activate my smartbombs. The rest ran away pretty damn fast.

I guess I better take my super tric merlin frigate and stay in .5-.9 for now.

I was wondering how long before I should venture into a little more dangerous grounds, but that answers my question. I will stick with rats for now.

Yea, I'm staying away from non secure space for the time being. Only have another month to go before I finally am done with the learning stuff and can start on the more combat orientated stuff.

umm suiciding with 7 large Smartbombs vs 15 intys 3 HAC G alliance fleet
killed 8 intys and podded all 8 people with my suicide apoc
meh the insurance contract was up in 3 days
and i didnt get podded!
