My bro-in-law has one and really like it. It run hotter than shit (as do all laptops based on P4's) though.
I'd look carefully at Centrino Pentium M based machines. They are low power, low heat, high throughput PIII's. According to conventional wisdom, they keep up with the P4's quite well, plus get some damned good battery time.

If all you're going to do is type on it and do basic things, get an Apple. Their laptops are hot. Otherwise you'll want a PC for gaming and such.
