yeah i cant even explain the anger thats evoked at the mere suggestion of notre dame (of all teams) taking one of the best football coachs we've had in 10+ years
Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune first included UNC coach Butch Davis on his list of possible successors to Charlie Weis eight days ago, and Davis is still on the Trib's updated list today -- as one of the "favorites," no less, behind Brian Kelly, Bob Stoops and Gary Patterson.
Could Davis really be under consideration by athletic director Jack Swarbrick? Yes, he's always been known for tough defenses and he rebuilt the Miami program, but he's 58, had a lymphoma scare in 2007, and his closest tie to Notre Dame/the Upper Midwest is that he was the Cleveland Browns coach after he left Miami. (See how much we had to stretch?)
By most accounts, Cincinnati's Kelly would jump at the job if offered, so perhaps Swarbrick will use Kelly as a fallback and aim high for the likes of Stoops and Urban Meyer (who has shot down the notion repeatedly). However, some will undoubtedly worry that Swarbrick could be turned down by high-profile coaches and in the process turn off a talented-but-willing option like Kelly.

Irish could keep recruits sans Weis
"As of right now, it looks like if a change is made that the new Notre Dame coach will have a chance to salvage a good class. ... If a change is made, there will be a chance for the new staff to salvage a good portion of the class -- particularly if several assistants off Weis' staff are retained. The current staff at Notre Dame is filled with excellent recruiters (Rob Ianello, Brian Polian and Brown, among others) who know how to get it done on a national level. While Weis works as hard as any head coach at recruiting, it's really the assistants that get the job done on any staff and it's no different at Notre Dame."
