I'm pretty sure this is how it's really done. It looks to me like they did clean up the edges of the little piece sticking out at the bottom left with photoshop and removed the background but the hand isn't actually hiding anything.
Oh and this was all linked on reddit. I didn't do shit but remember that I saw it.
