Civilization 5

Blitzkrieg

Veteran XV
Anyone playing it? Interested in multi-player?

I played it for a bit after release, got most of the achievements. I like to play MP with fellow TW if possible.

We can probably use IRC to coordinate or do it from this thread. I will try to idle in #Civ5 channel

I played it a bit and didn't find it challenging enough.

I agree. That's why I went on achievement collection but 1000 of this and that + sinking 367 ships as Elizabeth is just too much.

I liked Civ4 BTS though, especially with some of those custom made scenarios I downloaded.

the last difficulty level is like 100x harder than the 2nd to last. still working on a strat for that one. the rest of the stuff is just time played.

Game is still broken but they are working on a megapatch to address the major ai diplomacy and combat issues. Also with a few anti ics tweaks although not enough ATM for my tastes

I'm a relative newb to Civ, I may have played an older one but I may be mistaken. I liked the game, but I had a lot of problems with the ai diplomacy, as stated above. I found that in every game eventually the civilizations near me would declare war on me, and after having defeated them I would become known as a war monger and the rest of the world would stop dealing with me.

I played through it once and destroyed everybody, and then played through it a second time on the harder level and egypt and I were the last one left standing at the 500 turn mark. His score was higher than mine so he beat me. After that I really found little replayability in it. What can you do that you haven't done?

I refuse to install this game on the grounds that I know the moment I did, I'd hear a giant sucking sound that was all my free time going right out the window.

It's basically a bug that the ai does that. They set the aggression parameters incorrectly. If it sensed your military was substantially weaker it would be more inclined to hate you and declare war even if you had a friendly past with them. If you spent your time building up your empire and not keeping up on the military front (90% of civ players) you were pretty much doomed to be at war with all the civs. Also It didn't help that it would aggressively settle cities near you and then blame you for encroaching on their borders

It's been said before: it's as if no one had play tested this game before release

Yeah it seems like everyone has the same gripes. I sometimes get that same feeling too, or at least wonder what the fuck the testers were doing that they didn't come to the same conclusion as practically anyone that plays the game. I tried to settle all choke points around my Cap early on, and then have troops in secondary cities more to the interior of my empire so as to not be lining my borders with troops. I would accept all proposals. Eventually the ai would start lining the border, and after a while declare war on me, even when we were relatively equally as far as military went.

I also found the payments to keep the citystates happy to be ridiculously high. Even after declaring that I was protecting a city state, saving them from annihilation at the hands of my neighbors, I would still have pay insane amounts of gold that I could never afford in order to make them permanent allies. I was never able to make one of them so, and they would be holding some precious resource every fucking time.

I've lost sleep on previous Civ releases but not this one. I don't think you need to worry about this one.

I defeated deity but I set the game up to make it easy. Just do duel map on deity, pick Greek, it's not too hard. Get horseback riding ASAP and just pump out horses. Don't bother build 3rd city, just get 1 city found ASAP, build warrior, build worker or settler (depending how the situation), ignore all other techs and get horseback riding. You need some military to escort your settler (build it after 1 worker or 2nd military unit, depends on your situation), found 2nd city on a horse tile closest to AI. Build horseman ASAP. As far as social policy, just go straight honor tree so you get bonus against barbarian + get a great general. clear barbarian camp = extra gold to buy horseman with cash to speed up the process. With 3-4 horseman, AI isn't hard. You might want to get an archer out to counter enemy's spearman and help with city bombardment if necessary. I don't know if they nerfed the horseman yet or not since I haven't played for a while but deity is pretty easy.

I added some tags to the thread for you.

thanks

Civ5 was a disappointment for me. It's still good but I was expecting more. Compare with other Civ, this one seem to be relatively easy except deity level. Also, this version seem to force you to play ICS, ala Civ 2 style.

Just get patronage tree social policy as quickly as possible if you are going for city state game. I have not been able to win deity game without military win. I can win culture or diplomatic game in king or less difficulty level. AI cheats too much in higher difficulty. Thank god AI is an idiot when it comes to combat.

I don't think Civ5 is a finished game, it seem to be still in alpha stage, not even beta with all the problems it has. You guys also seem to be more patient. I have a tendency to build more troops, unless I play archipelago style map. In one archipelago map, I built like no military and just 1 or 2 ships. My next door AI declared war on me and landed troops on my island. Thank god my tirisime and my pathetic land troops managed to hold my cities on my little island. After I destroyed the initial wave (with luck because AI is too incompetent), I focused on navy only, sunk most of my neighbor's fleet and eventually was able to bombard his cities, land 1 land troop on his island, lure his land units out, then destroy them by bombardment. AI is just too dumb, they decide whether or not to attack you based on your military score but military score is not a good indicator in my opinion, unless the player is incompetent.

On more normal map, I try to build at least 1 military unit per my own city and almost always horseman rush a bit to get some cities from AI, increase my growth, choke off AI growth. Once I control my continent, then game's not too bad unless there is a run away AI on another continent or something. AI diplomacy is non-existent. You try to please them, then they turn on you sooner or later, there is no consistency so to speak. They are almost always enemy, never friend throughout the entire game :(
