hey guys...

the budget is $1800

I've already got the obvious stuff sorted(HDD, ram, drives, sound)
I just can't decide between Intel or AMD(in the +/-$200 range)

What do you guys think? I'm trying to get the best of everything: Gaming, multimedia(playback, encoding), longevity

ill be back to post what I've got selected so far... k

I <3 Intel personally after experiencing both. I think it's a matter of preference - there are studies that say AMD's are better for gaming, but its such a negligable difference that it really doesn't make much difference (imo). Intels also run cooler... I think :)

I just bought AMD but for some reason id say intel. Fact is, id have gotten intel if i couldve afforded it. But the 2.8 was $40 more than the 2800+

the 2.8C is much much better than the 2800+, though you would also have to factor in the motherboard you'd need to buy too

i've had both amd and pentium
i prefer pentium.

some say amd is better for gaming, but i doubt there are many amd's that are better than my p4. i got a 2.6 and oc'ed it to 3.25 on air 100% stable, no problems at all. so w/ a 2.8 (which is what i'd recommend you get) you should be able to get 3.5 w/ really good cooling, at least 3.4 i'd imagine, getting an extra 50 out of the fsb is a sinch w/ the new p4's.

if you go p4, i'd recommend the abit max3, ic7's newest board, put that together w/ some 3200ll corsair xms and you've got a great machine.

just got p4 2.6c and running 3.2 with stock fan. :-o temp @ 58 after playing painkiller.

get a zalman, it's got a 92mm fan on it, all copper hs...works great and is pretty quiet. well worth the 30 bucks you'd spend on it.

for a budget around 200(+20), i'd say get the 3.0C or 3.0E

if you can afford a decent motherboard

What other stuff did you get that you only want to spend about $200 on a cpu? Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you can get a beast of a computer for $1000, let alone $1800.

with $1800, thats more than enough for an AMD 64 system which is going to beat intel any day of the weak in games, unless its the EE p4 chip, gl buying that

still, the amd64 is the way to go

suggestion was for a budget, but w/o budget, amd64 all the way

I have a 9800pro. one of the first ones, a visiontek. it does me nicely...

if you're going to be buying a 9800/5700 line or up you are buying it b/c you want to be able to run games w/ all the settings up AND aa/af running as well. ati's are best for this. i'd recommend a 128mb 9800pro, powercolor's is good, sapphires is good, ati's is good. get one that has a program that let's you oc it a bit.

mine on stock and runs ut2k4 jedi academy, nwn, and everything in between flawlessly w/ all of the setting on high and w/ 4/4 aa/af.

i thought about upgrading to the x800's but the only reason i'd do that is if a) hl2/doom3 wouldn't run over 80fps w/ all highest setting on my 9800 pro, or b) i had a 19 in. monitor.

p4's rawk out for multi tasking.

i usually am dl'ing porn, burning cd's, playing tchaik in winamp, and play ut2k4 with no problems at all.

i'm not too familiar w/ the amd64's, i hear they're great...but i don't think it's enough of a difference to get me away from pentiums. they are easy to work w/ in bios and you can get a lot of bang for your buck
