AIM alternatives: did they ever get better?

I remember Gaim and shit used to be cool alternatives but useless because sending music and attachments never seemed to work. What's the best one now? How are the features?

I like Pidgin. I think it used to be gaim. You can send and receive files no prob for any network.

I'm curious what people use as well. Gaim was a total POS under XP. I have used free trillian on and off which is ok.

Pidgin works well, though it seems a bit memory heavy for what it offers. I hear Miranda is a good lightweight alternative. I also hear both are a billion times better than Trillian.

I use Miranda solely as an AIM client. Pretty lightweight but hard to configure to how I like it.

The extensions for Pidgin make it a worthwhile application. I especially like the chatlog function and an extension that tells you when someone is typing even before you've begun a convo.

Also, Meebo.com. Not exactly a client but a good website that lets you chat via various protocols.
