About these yahoo pipes

Is there anyway to take individual fields and parse the strings with any of these functions? Or concatenate the individual fields? I'm not quite getting this. halp.

I'm messing around with it while I do a fresh install on my other computer and while cool, I can't find any way to parse out data in each feed which is kinda odd. I figured you'd be able to do that atleast.
