Faulty tampons recalled across Canada, U.S.

Tampons that have reportedly broken apart and left pieces inside users’ bodies have been recalled across Canada and the United States.

American corporation Kimberly-Clark recalled specific shipments of U by Kotex Sleek Tampons with regular absorbency on Tuesday in a news release posted online. The tampons were distributed to stores across North America over the last two years, manufactured between Oct. 7, 2016, and Oct. 16, 2018 and distributed between Oct. 17, 2016, and Oct. 23, 2018.

The Wisconsin-based company said it received reports of tampons “unravelling and/or coming apart upon removal.” In some cases, users had to seek medical attention to remove pieces of broken tampons left inside their bodies.

The company also received “a small number of reports” of infections, vaginal irritation, localized vaginal injury and other symptoms.

Bills target 'awkward' practice of police asking for cash

LANSING — Michigan motorists stopped for speeding in other states would no longer be required to make an immediate payment, and Michigan State Police troopers would avoid the “awkward” requirement of asking out-of-state motorists to hand over cash, under a package of bills approved by a Senate panel Thursday.

Senators were told the harsh treatment for Michigan residents stopped in other states and out-of-state residents stopped in Michigan is a result of the fact Michigan is one of only a handful of states that does not belong to multi-state compacts for sharing information about driving convictions and other information.

Though some police agencies in other states accept credit cards, police in Michigan are required by law to either collect cash or take an out-of-state driver’s license as security, said Trooper Chris Gerard, the agency's legislative liaison.

“It’s awkward,” he told the Senate Transportation Committee. "I've been called a criminal," and “I’ve been told to enjoy my steak dinner.”


Also, "people need their driver's license," Gerard testified, citing the example of someone who flew in from out of state, gets pulled over, and is faced with surrendering the driver's license they need as identification to fly home.

"I have followed, or had a motorist follow me, up to 10 miles to find a convenience store with an ATM," Gerard said. "It's an awkward situation. Then, they're handing you a fistful of cash through your patrol car window in the parking lot of a convenience store."

House Bills 5542, 6011, and 6012, authorizing the state to join the multi-state Driver Licence Compact and Nonresident Violator Compact, and adjusting state law accordingly, were approved 5-0 by the committee. The bills already passed the state House and now move on to the full Senate.

Gerard said the change will also help Michigan residents stopped for moving violations in other states.

Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, the committee chairman, remembered being stopped out-of-state many years ago, when returning from a trip to Florida with a group of friends.

"I remember (the officer) saying, 'We take cash, credit cards, and traveler's checks," Casperson said.

Now that I think of it, no... nevermind. I mean, it's pretty awesome that they can think of using one of the worst living things on the planet and put it to good use.
