Fantasy/Sci-fi Book recommendations revisited

I'm not sure if I recommended it earlier in the thread or not but....

Promise of Blood (The Powder Mage Trilogy): Brian McClellan: 9780316219044: Amazon.com: Books

The Powder Mage trilogy is fantastic. Very unique magic system, great character development, hard to put it down. It manages to mix US civil war era weapons with traditional spell and sword in a way that is extremely interesting and exciting to read.

Recommending it again because I'm about to finish the first book in the second trilogy involving the same characters - Sins of Empire. Not as good but definitely better than the last few fantasy novels I've read.
 
War40k stuff isnt for everyone but I've followed recommendations from here. Read these and they were enjoyable as a series

Just finished Wolfsbane, now I have Sons of the Hydra and Carrion. Throne. Have the 6 Witcher books as well while I wait for the next books in a handful of series:
  • Glen Cook - next Black Company book
  • Ian C Esselmont - next Malazan book
  • Scott Erikson - next Malazan book
  • Patrick Rothfuss - next Kingkiller book (yeah right)
  • GRRM - next ASOIF book (lol)
  • Joe Abercrombie - next First Law book
  • Brandon Sanderson - next Mistborn/Stormlight books
  • Scott Lynch - next Gentlemen Bastards book
  • R Scott Bakker - next Second Apocalypse book

The top 15 in that list above (that I havent read yet) look pretty unappealing. Several love/romance backbones or SJW/girlpower taglines. If anyone has read An Ember in the Ashes, The Fifth Season,The City of Brass,The Night Circus, or Six of Crows and think they are worth a read, say something. I'll give it a shot but they sound unappealing from their descriptions.

If you like wh40k stuff I highly recommend Dan Abnett, pretty much everything from him is awesome

Eisenhorn and ravenor are both Inquisitor trilogies, gaunts ghosts is an awesome imperial gaurd series, I think he has a Titan and space marine book too.

One of the things I have learned in the past 5 years or so is to no longer put any faith in the awards systems, especially for SciFi books. Vox Day has been documenting the Hugo awards for a long time now and like many great things, it has been infected and completely controlled by SJW's who give out awards to 'authors' based on their social justice activism.

I haven't read Gaunts Ghosts yet. But I've read both Eisenhorn/Ravenor and the Magos. Dig them for sure. Dan is definitely the top War40 author I've read. I like Aaron Dbowski or whomever

The HH is a monumental undertaking and I like that each of the books provides little tidbits to other things that have happened across the saga or that echo into 40K.

Anyway, MoM is the best of them all so far imo. Old Earth was decent except how Shadrack was handled. Garbage. The latest one, Slaves to Darkness, is one I am still mulling over. Read it and you will understand why.

Btw, something that has long been hinted about is confirmed in a short story in "The Lords of Terra" - First Lord of the Imperium. Wont spoil it.
 
I've been reading some Salvatore lately. Child of a Mad God was great.

it's set in the same world as Demon Wars i believe. I started reading the saga of the first king. On The Bear right now but am taking a break.

I'm getting old and gray waiting for those myself

I've read all the Jack Reacher books in-between and still none have come out.
 
I thought The Fifth Season was very good. I thought it was a pretty interesting story and it could be a standalone read. The 2nd book has more mixed reviews but I have yet to read it.
 
Currently making my way through the Expanse series (books).

Powerful plot armor armor, but enjoyable.

Have not watched the show yet.
 
Finished the Expanse books that have been released to date. Really good sci-fi. I appreciate the attempt at Newtonian physics and orbital mechanics in space travel.

Then I proceeded to try to read some books in the Silver Ships series, decided it was crap and gave up.

Recently I've started the Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown. Definitely recommend it. Distopian future where the solar system is colonized and possesses a highly stratified society (think Indian caste system++). Protagonist is an undercover terrorist ... or a democratic freedom fighter depending on your perspective.

2nd book was kinda eh

Reading third now, kinda eh, hopefully gets more interesting

The colorful insults are fun to read
 
Reading the Fatemarked series right now... I like it.
If you have kids, I'm reading the Ranger's Apprentice series with my son and it's a fun read.
