I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Ben Stein doesn't understand the definition of a recession.
We can go far in engineering with what we know. But if the public gained knowledge of space glass, we'd be putting cities under it

The glass strong as it was (20x steel) did not survive in the direct path of the Planet X explosion. They used Roddenberry to show the public some space age materials (that were actually real) on Star Trek IV.
Most of these materials had to be formed in space. This was the garden planet, not supposed to have factories here. Probably, none of the planets were meant to have factories on the surface.
