I really think it was just a lack of imagination.

Mexico sucks but we have a state named NEW Mexico... It's not honoring it, it's saying... Hey, you suck... so we'll just add "NEW" in front of it because newer is better.

I live in New South Wales.
I still don't know if it's supposed to be a newer version of South Wales, or a version of Wales which is both New and South.
If you think they were lazy with naming when the Brits got to America, they were just totally phoning it in by the time they got here. "Queensland". Really? "South Australia". "Western Australia" (at least they got the '-ern'), the Northern Territory. There's no place with lazier names than Australia.
Big reef that shields the coast? Great Barrier Reef. Big mountain range that splits the coast off from the interior? Great Dividing Range. Big-ass desert, lots of sand? Great Sandy Desert.
