Virginia Van Zandt shot herself in the chest with a .357- caliber handgun early Sunday evening, according to police. About 30 to 40 minutes later, her husband shot himself in the head with the same weapon, Binghamton detectives said.

How can the police really know if this woman shot herself in the chest? What rules out the possibility that the husband shot her in the chest and then later shot himself? Just because the wound was from close range or if her fingerprints were on the gun doesn't mean she did it to herself. The husband could have done it from close up and she could have touched the gun at some other point. Do they have some way of being able to know what happened for sure?

And is shooting yourself in the chest really that common for suicide? It doesn't sound like it would be nearly as quick and painless as in the head.

Women typically do not headshot when killing themselves with a pistol/firearm. They usually go for the chest. /case closed

ding ding ding to [strike]above[/strike] first two.

There's a pattern of residue sprayed out all over the joint when you fire a gun. She'd obviously have had some on her hands.

Though.. it's kinda odd to be shooting yourself in the chest. Can't imagine doing it on purpose - head's the pick for suicide. I'm guessing maybe there was perhaps a 'shadow' or something in the residue that gave the position she was in when she fired, I dunno.

Edit: really? Chicks shoot themselves in the chest? Fucking wierdos.. Guess they wanna look good for the funeral or something, don't wanna ruin the makeup.

the residue will be the biggest giveaway. if she was holding the gun and pointing it at herself and fired, it'll leave a different pattern than if he shot her up close.
