Why do pedestrians always seem to talk to themselves?

Uh, can't you "hear" yourself think? Why do you need to verbalize it? I'm just trying to understand, as I have never had that need to sit/stand/walk and talk to myself.

I do this, but when walking also. And about crazy homeless people walking around talking to themselves - you get a lot of that in Downtown Los Angeles. I had a great time chatting it up with the crazies in Little Tokyo this last Tuesday.
