Video Capture Cards ?

I have a ton of old VHS and Camcorder Hi8 "homemovies" that I want to put onto cd and edit. I have no idea of what kind of card and software to get. I've read about Pinnacle, Leadtek and Hauppauge but no clear cut reviews pitting them against each other and their respective editing software. Anyone have any experience with these and thoughts?

I converted a bunch of my old VHS movies using an AverMedia TV98 card and tmpeg. I bought a cheap card ($15) with no compression because I had a PC with very fast SCSI drives.

Do some reading on www.vcdhelp.com and it will get you on yer way.
 
I'm having trouble with my Aver card for some reason :(

Whenever I hit record, it says, "Create video encoder filter fail." Now, I'm a complete n00b when it comes to video stuff, so anybody mind helping me out a bit?
