I think (based on the casting info) they're going to show the White Council smashing the Necromancer's (Sauron) fuck in Mirkwood. They make a passing reference to the mission in the book, but that's why Gandalf bails out on the party midway through the journey.

Most likely. All the kiddy songs the elves sing as the party approaches Rivendell, the comical, quarreling trolls...there's bound to be a few changes if they want the feel of the movies to mesh with LOTR

being held hostage by the trolls, the goblin king, the spiders, the wood elves can all be made more... tense.

then you have some sort of violence around dol guldur, the smaug battle and lastly the battle of 5 armies.
 
i actually watched the full "making of lotr" dvds that came with the extended set... it was like another 2 hours for each movie lol. the effort they put into this shit was fuckin insane... brought a tear to my eye :D

Agreed. Weta workshop rocked it and the CGI was superb.
