[T:V] Vehicles

It's pretty strange but in classic, hand-held missile launchers rarely take out a decent shriker. So removing them will reallynot change the balance much imo. I'd like them to leave a static base rocket/missile turret yea, which i think they will, but definitly remove the hand-held, so this way every light doesnt have to carry flares.

I would like them to leave vehicle shields the way they are. Basically because the way the shields tie into the thrusters, and blasters, really makes being a great shriker a balancing act, and adds to the learning curve. If anyone is not familiar with that, basically if you burn your thrusters from a standstill, or fire your blasters, your shields will go way down, making you vunerable to a small attack that can destroy an uninjured shrike. This is cool imo. Leave it.

Maybe just give the shirke a little less health or shields overall to adjust to the removal of missile launchers.

Personally I havent even thought of vehicle inventories, I totally forgot about what Thrax mentioned about the vehicle bays and stuff. Wonder how thats all gonna work.,.... Was there any more specifics to that in that magazine article? And were there any screenshots of vehicles?

Well, I know it's been done before, but think of these two conflicting statements:

"We need more playerbase in Tribes! The game is dying off and the old players are going elsewhere with all these changes."

"Tribes needs more skill! It sucks how I can't stop heavies dead in their tracks with one fell swoop like I used to do in Tribes 1. I wish people were as good with a disk as I would so you wouldn't NEED anything except a few mines and a disk launcher to take down vehicles. Freaking wussie newbies."

I don't see those two statements as having to conflict. Having a lot of depth and a long learning curve doesn't have to drive players away. To me, the thing that is most likely to drive new players away is buying the game, and trying to play on a server full of veterans, getting their asses kicked and called names, then kicked off the server.

The people at the lower end of the learning curve will have tons of fun playing the game as long as the people at the top end leave them the fuck alone. This is the primary reason that i hope that something like zadmin/RAID/TrueAdmin/whatever exists right from release.

I think Protoss is prolly right on on this one [believe it or not ZP heheh].

I, like many others, hate T2 vehicles and wouldn't care if they were totally removed from the game. For me, skiing defines the Tribes experience. I love Tribes because I get to BE the vehicle.

That said, a meaningful minority of the community loves vehicles. Moreover, new players get extremely excited by vehicles (the "WOW" factor). Further, as ZP points out, they add diversity to the Tribes experience.

Recognizing this, I like the idea of including vehicles with the caveats that they:

1. Shouldn't be useful for capping (aside from llama capping) - keep the T1 eject. Vehicles SHOULD be useful for fast setup/escorting, however. I absolutely hated depending on vehicles for capping in base and ++ (didn't play classic seriously due to rl time issues).

2. Are balanced generally with the armor classes.

3. [Shrikes] Are slower at top speed than an outstanding, fast moving light skiier. If a light skiier smashes a route, discjumps, and has a wicked return he should be able to avoid the ram from behind. Outstanding, vicious fast light skiing should always dominate a "no skill to fly fast" vehicle [not saying vehicles don't require skill to ram/shoot down etc.].

4. Are more fun to use for supporting positions. For example, the bomber's belly gun, while powerful in the hands of a highly practiced user, sucks hard for the average player. The belly gun is generally useless and not fun to practice. Further, HPC riders should man interesting guns - not just stand there with their active loadouts. That is lame.

5. Since we have to have vehicles, I want boats with fucking cool guns - make tanks stay on land.

I wouldn't mind big vehicle maps in competition if the above were implemented.

I like how ZP thinks he is some kind of god of vehicles. He posted nearly the exact same thread in the Planetside forum awhile back.

see this is why this problem will never be solved for everyone...

although i like skiing, i dont think any armor should be able to go faster then a 'jet' type aircraft.

If you've seen ZP shoot down as many opponents and ram as many cappers as I have, you'd realize that he's easily in the top .05 % of Tribes pilots. Why the ad hominem attacks, anyway? Go after the ideas, not the man.

For his use of the phrase "ad hominem" I declare Darius the winner of this thread.

ad hom·i·nem
adjective

appealing to emotions: appealing to people’s emotions and beliefs rather than their ability to think.

From Latin, to the person.
