Strange WINXP problem

Every so often when i ctrl-alt-delete to check what programs I have running in the background I will see that I have like 20-30 IEXPLORE.EXE files running at one time. Each one of these has a memory footprint of about 5k, so they add up and bring my computer to a crawl. What could possibly be causing this?

(my internet explorer is normally closed when this happens too)

spyware possibly? adaware and spybot. google for it.

Sounds like spyware/adware to me.

or virus time, cause my extra iexplore.exe generally takes up a lot more per window
