Shooting on VA Tech campus

Everyone carrying guns is not a practical solution. It actually just makes things harder for the police, imagine going into a place looking for a gunman, and someone around every corner is bunkered down watching the door, gun drawn. That's incredibly dangerous, and what if a large majority did carry handguns, and he just happened on a room without a handgun owner? What you're really proposing is an armed vigilante brigade that just isn't reasonable.

The practical solution is to figure out what sort of mental disorder or temperament leads to this kind of stuff. Rational people don't go shooting 32 innocent people because your g/f is a bitch. It's a societal thing, either the parents were incompetent and really just screwed this kids head up, or the guy was insane.

You can't really claim insanity with someone who kills so systematically either. Like the columbine kids, entering rooms and with enough ammo to go on a rampage. It's just a freak individual with an anger issue. One where he got so mad he lost control (at least that's what it sounds like).

It's hard to tell, I mean there are instances where lives have been saved due to concealed carry laws.

Also, it's hard to determine the mindset of people because sometimes people can hide who they really are, he obviously had been planning this, he had a girlfriend, I'm sure he was probably 'smart'.

This is odd:

June 28th, 2006

One such scare came home to us here in Blacksburg just last week, as police reportedly discovered a bomb in a local Blacksburg resident’s home. Janaka Nuwan Kumara Siriwardena was stopped for running a stop sign just last Friday when police discovered this man had been participating in other, more nefarious, illegal activities. He had allegedly been building bombs in his own apartment right here in Blacksburg — in Oak Bridge, where so many other students live. After police obtained a warrant and entered his home, they found evidence of even more illegal activities. Soon afterward, he was charged with burglary, manufacturing an explosive device, possession of cocaine and making a false police report.

Blacksburg is known as being a very safe, student-oriented environment. This town prides itself on being quiet — a calm place for students to study and people to live without the hassle of a major city. And so we live, undisturbed, silently protected by our police. Until an incident like this bomb scare takes place, we may not even realize that dangers exist here, as well as in the country and world at large. We take comfort in our isolation, false as it may be, and, as a result, we often go astray in our overconfidence of just how safe our own neighborhood is. More importantly, we find ourselves forgetting just how necessary and significant the police force is within our area.

Handguns are the real problem, and also cause of the most gun-related deaths.

Little known fact is that there haven't been any felony murders in U.S that resulted from machine gun fire for example, even tho there are plenty of them lying around in gun collections of private persons, and who knows where.

I'd say about 1/4-1/2 of the people don't lock their doors in BBurg. After Morva and today they will from now on. It really is that quiet and that small of a town. If VT wasn't there, all you would see are cows and corn.

Any VT students figure out the killer's name yet?

That's the weirdest thing..... The media is not reporting anything about the shooter really... I mean, Asian, 20's is all they have.... you would think that some students would have known the guy or his girlfriend and would have information on what the hell happened.
