Selling PC... what to save?

Do not sell harddrives ever.

Incinerate the drive once you are finished with it.

To securely delete files, you should use the Guttman Algorithm.

If your erasure tool has DoD/NSA algorithms, be aware these are for RAM - not harddrives. You cannot securely delete information on solid state drives. Incinerate them.

I am not going to address the issue of erasing data, only saving critical data to a new computer.

I have to assume you made a backup of all your "My Documents" crap.

But, in Program Files, you might want to save some of those config files.

For example, if you use WS_FTP, or almost any other FTP program,
the *.ini stores all your FTP info.

I use a cookie manager, and there is a *.dat file that has all the cookies I want
to keep, and the the ones I want deleted immediately when I close my browser.
(Currently almost 10k deletable cookies, vs. 179 keepers)

If you have an advanced HOSTS file, that would be good to bring over.
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS

If you use an e-mail client, you should archive the entire contents.

---

There's a USB utility cable, can't think of the name atm, that can transfer
programs, licenses and settings from an old comp to a new one.

yes someone is gonna buy computers from random strangers and then spend thousands of dollars recovering formatted data for no reason whatsoever

sounds like a rational fear

Or you could use the software that floats around in "stores" to recover it for free.

Or you could get infected and lose it.

Or...

Durak, you're not too bright - don't pretend.
