I saw a presentation by that guy, he was giving a lecture at Concordia in january.
He got everything to work with valves, sort of like a binary system with open and closed positions. Using enough valves he could practically do anything (it would just be monstrously huge). He brought a bunch of stuff when he was over and demonstrated how the "animals" (yes, he is also pretty nuts) sensed water and switched gears to walk the other way.
