Sci fi nerds to the rescue?

Going to europe shortly and looking for an adventure sci fi book. While I like deep thinkers, or even better sci fi books such as Foundation etc, are there some good series akin to the X Wing series or Thrawn trilogy. Added bonus for many character story lines and/or space combat.

I'm re-reading Aristoi by Walter Jon Williams, kinda hard to find. Also, by the same author, On Angel Station. Those are engaging SF.

If you haven't read, On Basilisk Station by David Webber, that is the first book in the Honor Harrington series. Pretty fun.

Have a good trip and try to look up once and a while.

Pretty much everything by David Drake.

Hammer's Slammers
Igniting The Reaches trilogy

He also has a fantasy behemoth series, 5-6 books so far, good stuff, first one is called Lord of the Isles.

You might like Harry Turtledove's Worldwar series. It's basically about an alien invasion of Earth in the middle of WW2. It can be a little cheesy (the aliens are comically inept some times), but it's still very entertaining.
