Refurbished Athlon or Intel Laptop ?

I'm looking to pick up a laptop for around $450. I can get a faster machine if I go with Athlon at that price, but I know that athlon's run hot so would I be better off with a slower intel as opposed to faster athlon laptop?
 
used p3-500s usually run about $450-500. cheap new ones can go $700-800.

do you want a used toyota or a brand new hyundai?
