because i don't launch my phone off 50 foot buildings, often enough to warrant taking a phone that i love the look of and is marketed as being thin and light, and encasing it in 4 inches of rubber.

That's overkill. I have always used cases that are durable, thin and clear. This has served me well, as i don't tend to be careless with my expensive electronic devices.
