[Mega] MAGA Super Trump Mega Thread

Sure there is an argument for protectionist tariffs, and every time they are tried they fail to do what they are intended to do and end up causing more of the problems they are trying to solve.

At least with something like the border adjustment tax you aren't pushing on just one lever but all of them.

Krugman sucks.

The main concern with actual government debt and budget deficits is how much of a drag on the economy the debt service is.

The issue with trade deficits is much more abstract though, and shouldn't be thought of as a singular line item in the balance sheet. If you get hung up on the number you make dumb decisions, like these tariffs.

also it isn't going to work anyways

a 30% tariff increase on steel is just going to get China to send the material to another country we do deal with........they will take a small % overhead and ship it to us with their label and logo of origin

already the case with aluminum and honey to garlic to all the rest

and nothing happens except another worthless middle man getting his cut and China reciprocally hitting us with very real tariffs that we will have to play the same game on

it is a race to the bottom for sure.....but that is where we are at right now

that is exactly where all of this is headed imo

i have no real argument with that

i have long asked myself how we can compete with China without becoming just like them.......with the same worker rights, wages, and environment to boot

the answer is that we can't..........free trade was meant to bring the rest of the world up to our living standards and has instead brought us down to their level. flooded us with their workers and terrible products that are really nothing more than sweat shop products and blood stones.

now that this cat is out of the bag i don't know wtf u do to get it back in again.

trump is trying to use these taxes to buffer between these two realities. but you can't buffer between worlds colliding and half a century worth of bad decision making without some serious turbulence.

but from the chart above........we need to realize that this isn't the cause for our economic issues we have been seeing this past year. this is a response to a bigger issue we were facing either way

Holy fuck tariffs are horrible even republicans dont want them

The only people that want them are steel union workers that are 99% democratic

Tariffs are unilateral economic warfare. A petty, tit-for-tat business that will kill jobs for both countries. The trade deficit (savings maximum) is always less than the export economy (maximum potential domestic loss)..

Our trade deficit with Canada is $18B. But we traded $582B. Should we risk pissing them off and lose up to $582B in economic activity, just to save $18B?

The real problem is China China China.

China - $535 billion traded with a $375 billion deficit.
Canada - $582 billion traded with a $18 billion deficit.
Mexico - $557 billion traded with a $71 billion deficit.
Japan - $204 billion traded with a $69 billion deficit.
Germany - $171 billion traded with a $65 billion deficit.

There is very little win here when you go down that long and winding road.

He could hypothetically halt global trade with America. That would surely MAGA. He's getting everyone on the global stage to hate us except Israel. So More MAGA!

It's going to be awesome when we lose tens of thousands of American jobs and those that still have jobs can't afford anything made of metal.

Which decade are you talking about?

Because it sounds like every decade since the fifties.

I'm talking specifically about how Trump's proposed steel and aluminum tariffs would adversely affect the economy.
