If any of the knowledge I've gained from watching Dr. Who is worth remembering, it's that a race of lavarock aliens destroyed Pompeii, so it only makes sense that they would also be destroying Japan.

I went to that pompeii exhibit and there are some funny things they leave off the brochure

Namely that all the preserved bodies are slaves that were wearing leg shackles preventing their escape. You can still see the shackles. So pretty much the land owners etc got to try to make an escape or get down near the water but the house slaves were left to bake in the ash.
