When TBC released it didn't take 12 hours. Even on grinding 24/7 that was impossible. Last I remember it was something to the tune of 3 - 4 days after release. Memory serves it was three people playing in 8-hour shifts working on the same gnome mage, and that's how long it took non-stop.. I suspect it'll be about the same time for LK, there's plenty of people in the world with no life.
Actually Darus only made it to 79 before being banned, then reset to 70 a few hours later. First one to 80 was Nymh (sp?), a warlock that used an ungrouped healer and AOE dotting to great effect. Hit 80 27 Hrs after the EU servers went up. Impressive
